1987 - Girls 7 Inch Single

"Girls" is a single from Tina Turner's album "Break Every Rule". This song was written by long time friend and careersaver David Bowie and co-written by Erdal Kizilcay. "Girls" is a pop/rock song about a woman’s feelings after her love left her. Another huge name who played the drums on this track is Phil Collins.

"Girls" was a great song but it seems that it only charted in The Netherlands and Poland. As for Poland we can’t find any chart positions. Tina shot a promotion video for the song and was recorded during her Break Every Rule Special in Camden Palace London in 1986. "Girls" was included and excluded during the Break Every Rule World Tour in 1987/1988. A live version was released on the album "Tina Live in Europe", and on a bootleg LP which was recorded in Dortmund 1987.

As far as we know there’s no promotional performance of the song. We have never seen footage of Tina performing the song on TV or live in concert. The song was released in 1987 as a 7" single and 12" single.
The B-side for the song was "Take Me To The River", a cover version from Al Green. The song has a religious background and is about losing material possessions and objects of value. The person is out of love and wants to go back to the basics, but is confused about whether if it’s good for him/her, because it seems this person also never had a lot of other belongings. However the person wants to wash it all off in the river. Tina recorded the song in 1983 with Martyn Ware from the Heaven 17 group as a B.E.F. production. The song is never released on an album and still remains as a rare track.

Girls
We come and we go
We kiss
Come and we go
Like a breeze
Rushing your cheek
Like pain
Like the tears on a face

Girls

Girls
We come and we go
Like spirits
We vanish at dawn
My heart
Suspended in time
Like you
Vanish like tears in the rain
Girls
We take our loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away
Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are we giving away

We used to be so happy
Remember
Remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely could feel

Girls
We come and we go
We kiss
Come and we go
Like spirits
Rushing your cheek
Who like pain
Like the tears on a face
Girls
We take our loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away
Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are we giving away

We used to be so happy
Remember
Remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely
Could feel
Could feel
Could feel

"Take Me To The River"
Take me to the river

Single: Girls (originally from Al Green)- 1986

Wash me!

I don't know why I love you like I do
with all the changes I keep going through
lost all the money and my happiness
and I haven't had the worst of it yet
I wanna know, tell me, tell me why
I love it still

Take me to the river
wash me down
yeah, drop me in the water
back to my fishing ground

And I don't know why they treat me so bad
think of all the good things that I've never had
love is an ocean I won't forget
my sweet sixteen I will never regret
I wanna know, won't you tell me, tell me why
I love it still

C'mon, river
wet me down
yeah, dip me in the water
back to my fishing ground

And hold me, squeeze me
just love me, and tease me
till I can't, till I can't
take it no more

I don't know why you treat me so bad
think of all the good things I've never had
love's an ocean I won't forget
my sweet sixteen I will never regret
I wanna know, you tell me, tell me why
I love it still

Take me to the river
and dip me in the water
take me to the river
drop me in the water
take me to the river
drop me in the water
yeah take me to the water my fishing ground
wash me, wet me
squeeze me, and tease me

    Tina Turner

Sometimes you've got to let everything go -- purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything . . . whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you'll find that when you're free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.

I never said "Well, I don't have this and I don't have that." I said, I don't have this yet, but I'm going to get it.

I will never give in to old age until I become old. And I'm not old yet!

I didn't have anybody, really, no foundation in life, so I had to make my own way. Always, from the start. I had to go out in the world and become strong, to discover my mission in life.
