1986 - Break Every Rule

Break every rule is the sixth solo album by Tina Turner, released on Capitol Records in 1986.
The album's predecessor, Private Dancer, set high commercial standards, yet Break Every Rule sold very well worldwide. It reached #4 on the Billboard 200, #2 on the UK albums chart and #1 in Switzerland, and also Germany (for 12 weeks). The RIAA certified Break Every Rule platinum, denoting 1 million shipments in the United States. It was also certified platinum in some European countries including Germany and the UK.

The original A-side of the vinyl album was entirely produced by Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, the team behind Turner's 1984 hit single "What's Love Got To Do With It", while side B included tracks produced by Bryan Adams, Bob Clearmountain, Mark Knopfler and Rupert Hine.

Review from Marek34:
"Break Every Rule" is fantastic album that sadly is often underappreaciated because of its lack of commercial successs. I can't consider "Break Every Rule" a disappointment, even in commercial terms, as it went all the way to #4 on the US charts and was certified double platinum.
This album should have been as major success as "Private Dancer" had been three years earlier.
This time Tina sounds more pop than rock and that's good, because her voice fits this style very well.
"Typical Male" is dancefloor ready, funky number that was the biggest hit off the album, hitting #2 on US Pop chart. "What You Get Is What You See" is country like song with great guitar solo and fast rhythm that also can make you dance.
"Two People" is one of the best ballads in Tina's catalouge, it's kind of r&b song with beautiful melody and Tina's incomparable vocals.
"Till The Right Man Comes Along" is another radio-friendly/pop number that was simply #1 hit in waiting. "Afterglow" is dance track with stunning keyboard solo by no other than Steve Winwood.
"Girls" is a song penned by David Bowie. It's an atmospheric number sung absolutley great by Tina.
"Back Where You Started" is the most hard rocking song off the album. Penned by Bryan Adams, it has great melody. It won Tina another Grammy award for best female rock performance.
"Break Every Rule"-great lyrics, beautiful chours. Another gem.
"Overnight Sensation" kind of funny rockabily song written and produced by Mark Knopfler.
"Paradise Is Here" - jewel. Simply stunning number. One of the greatest performances in Tina's career. Lyrics are great also. Probably the best song off the album.
"I'll Be Thunder"-beautiful ballad, that makes you listen to this album one more time. It seems that too many people judge this album by its sales statistics. It's better to forget about it and just listen to it with an open mind.

Turner undertook a huge world tour to promote the album, including the record-breaking date in Rio de Janeiro in which she played to 180,000 people. The concert was filmed and released on home video. Further dates from the European leg of her world tour were recorded and released as the live album Tina Live in Europe in 1988.

Following the release of the Break Every Rule album Turner recorded the duet "Tearing Us Apart" with Eric Clapton, included on his Phil Collins produced 1986 album "August" and also issued as a single in early 1987.

Tracklist
1.Typical Male
Typical Male

Album: Break Eevery Rule - 1986

Tell me lawyer what to do
I think I'm falling in love with you
Defend me, from the way I feel
Won't you give me some advice
On how to handle my private life
I'm sure that we can make a deal
I confess I'm a fool for men with a clever mind
But your intellect ain't no match
For this heart of mine

[Chorus:]
All I want is a little reaction
Just enough to tip the scales
I'm just using my female attraction
On a typical male, on a typical male

Your sense of justice I'll embrace
But your defense don't help my case
I'm deep in trouble with the law
Something about authority
Seems to bring out the bad in me
Hey lawyer, gotta catch me when I fall
Oh they say that you match your wits with the best of them
But I know when I'm close you're just like the rest of them

[Chorus]

So put your books aside
Loosen off the suit and tie
Open up your heart and let me in
Open up your heart and let me in

[Chorus]

- Terry Britten, Graham Lyle - 4:18
2.What you get is what you see
What you get is what you see

Album: Break Every Rule - 1986

Some boys got the look of a Greek Adonis
Some boys try to talk you off your feet
Some boys think they're gods gift to woman
Some boys think they're sweet enough to eat
Try to change the habit of a lifetime
Don't even try
Cause when you cut down deeper than the icing
You realize

[Chorus:]
What you get is what you see
Ain't nothing more to it
And if you wanna love a woman like me
It takes a man to do it
If what you get is what you see
Then I don't want your kind of love

Some guys got lips that you can't help kissing (Muh, muh, muh)
And some guys got a smile you can't resist
Some guys gotta build a reputation
They just wanna add you to the list
You got a lot of physical attraction
I can't deny
But can you guarantee me satisfaction
While I'm still waiting, waiting, waiting...

[Chorus]

So let me see your cards on the table
Before I buy
I always read the writing on the label
So give me reason to believe there's more to you than meets the eye

[Chorus]

- Britten, Lyle - 4:31
3.Two People
Two People

Album: Break Every Rule - 1986

Two people living on the edge of life
Are people running out of dreams and time
I can hear it when you tell me so
I can feel it but I can't let go

[Chorus:]
Two people gotta stick together and love one another
Save it for a rainy day
Some people gotta stay whatever
Give one another shelter on a rainy day

Two people living in the way we do
Are people trying to keep a love anew
What to say to make some sense of it
What to do to make the feeling fit

[Chorus]

I'll come running to your rescue
You gotta stand by me
There's a lot of love between us
We should never let go

[Chorus]

- Britten, Lyle - 4:11
4.‘Till The Right Man Comes Along
‘Till The Right Man Comes Along

Album: Break every rule - 1986

It’s time to face the music
Tonight I came to use it
You never know
Who you’re gonna meet in here

I thought I’d never find him
The dark and handsome kind
I used to dream of
And now you’re standing there

Though you’re looking good to me
It doesn’t mean that you can do as you please
No, no, no, no
Baby you’re the best thing in my life
Baby you’re my best bet here tonight

I’ve got no good reason to believe we’ll last for long
But that’s good enough for me ‘till the right man comes along

I’ve waited for a lover
The kind who’ll stay forever
You look to me
Like the sort of man I need

It’s not the best scenario
But now I’ve found you I’m not letting you go
No, no, no, no
Baby you’re the best thing in my life
Baby you’re my best bet here tonight
For the perfect guy maybe I should be holding on
And with you I could
‘Till the right man
‘Till the right man comes along

Baby you’re the best thing in my life
Baby the best bet here tonight
Until the right man comes along
‘Till the right man comes along
Comes along
Baby you’re the best
Say you the best
You’re the best thing in my life
Comes along

- Britten, Lyle - 4:11
5.Afterglow
Afterglow

Album: Break every rule - 1986

I need you here beside me to chase the night away
I need your love to guide me safe through another day
I lie and watch the lights go down
Say goodnight to another town
And though it hurts to be alone
I have my thoughts of you to keep me warm
In the afterglow of your love
Dreaming's all I'm guilty of
Everyday I'm playing tough
But read my mind

[Chorus:]
If you could see me now
Just living my life in a limbo
If you could see me now
The me that only you would know
Still burning in the afterglow

When the beat of the drum has faded
The show comes to an end
The stage is cleared and loaded
And the highway calls again
I stand and watch the lights go down
In the afterglow of your love
Dreaming's all I'm guilty of
Everyday I'm playing tough
But read my mind

[Chorus]

If you could see me now

Stay with me right to the end
Till I can hold you again

[Chorus]

- Britten, Lyle - 4:30
6.Girls
Girls

Album: Break every rule - 1986

Girls
We come and we go
We kiss
Come and we go
Like a breeze
Rushing your cheek
Like pain
Like the tears on a face

Girls

Girls
We come and we go
Like spirits
We vanish at dawn
My heart
Suspended in time
Like you
Vanish like tears in the rain
Girls
We take our loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away
Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are we giving away

We used to be so happy
Remember
Remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely could feel

Girls
We come and we go
We kiss
Come and we go
Like spirits
Rushing your cheek
Who like pain
Like the tears on a face
Girls
We take our loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away
Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are we giving away

We used to be so happy
Remember
Remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely
Could feel
Could feel
Could feel
Girls
Girls
Girls
Girls
Girls

7.Back where you started
Back where you started

Album: Break every rule - 1986

Baby, tell me what you're trying to prove
Playing games with my heart
Hey now listen, I ain't gonna take one more night
You're the one who broke the rules
And I'm the one who played the fool
Now you're trying to tell me it's alright
You should know better than to hurt a friend
You'll never get another chance again

[Chorus:]
You'll be back where you started
I know you won't admit it but you're broken-hearted
Back where you started
You think it's gonna be easy but it just gets harder, harder

You had a way with words
One look and I was under your spell
I didn't know should I stay or should I run
You can't deny you told me lies
Love 'em and leave 'em, baby, that's your style
I'm not afraid to take life as it comes
You play with fire I guess you'll never learn
You mess with me, babe, you 're gonna get burned

You'll be back where you started
Then you'll know how it feels when you've been discarded
Back where you started
You think you got it made but it won't get you far, no it won't get you far

Who's gonna help ya, throw you a lifetime
I'll tell you one thing, you've really done it this time
You took your one chance and let it slip away
You're not the kind who'll ever settle down
The rumor's getting out all over town
You'll be...

[Chorus]

- Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance - 4:27
8.Break every rule
Break every rule

Album: Break every rule - 1986

Every road that I walk
Every single flight I ever take
Though I'm thousands of miles away
In my mind every journey leads me closer to you
I've been all around this world
I've been in far too many states
But I'm under your spell
I've made my mistakes, oh, you can probably tell

You're every dream that I dream
You're every beautiful thing I've ever seen
I'm always singing your praises
Counting the days away

[Chorus:]
I would be your slave
I'd even be your fool
I'm so in love with you
I'm in love with you baby
I'm gonna break every rule

I hope you can forgive
Every white lie I'm forced to tell
They say that everything's fair in love and in war
And I'm not above cheating for you
One night I'll catch you off your guard
And you will finally fall so hard
Strategically sPeak Positioning I'm already beaten
I'll surrender to you
You're every dream that I dream
You're every beautiful thing I've ever seen
I'm always singing your praises
Counting the days away

[Chorus]

Every road that I walk on
Every flight that I ever take
Every dream that I dream of
Every journey brings me closer to you

- Rupert Hine, Jeannette Obstoj - 4:02
9.Overnight Sensation
Overnight Sensation

Album: Break every rule - 1986

Well, I guess I been a long time
Working in the back line
Trying to make a song fit
You know it never was mine
Two dollar high-heel and a honky tonk dress
In the rhythm and soul revues
I had a dream, I guess
Yes, yes

And I had to beat the stage fright
I had to cry all night
Tryin' to make a song fit
You know it never was right
I said, 'Girl, get up and get out of this mess
You're gonna be and overnight sensation
Be an overnight success'

And all through the badlands
Rockin' on the bandstands
It's so hard in the bar bands
When there's no one there who understands
And Lady Luck'll pass you by
And she'll never say, 'Yes
You're gonna be an overnight sensation
Gonna be an overnight success'

Well, I used to be a sweet little rock 'n' roll singer
Chasing after fortune and fame
What's your story? What's your payola?
Me, I'm in the music game

Well, I guess I've been a long time
Workin' in the backline
Tryin' to make a song fit
You know it never was mine
What can I tell you
I made a break I guess
Now I'm an overnight sensation
I'm an over overnight
I'm an over overnight success

- Mark Knopfler - 4:40
10. Paradise is here
Paradise is here

Album: Break every rule (originally from Paul Brady) - 1986

You say you wanna live some, move out into the fast lane
You say you need excitement to make you come alive
Some place a million miles from the shadows that surround you
I look for your attention, you're lost out in the future
Where lovers ask no questions and shadows never fall
Some pilgrim bound for paradise, no compromise

Paradise is here, it's time to stop your crying
The future is this moment and not some place out there
Tonight I need your love, don't talk about tomorrow

Right now, I need your loving
Right now, give it to me
Right now, I want your loving
Rigt now, now now now now

You talk about your new plans to move on up the stairway
You dream about the high life that's waiting for you there
A world of fame and fortune just around the corner

But I don't need no high life to make me feel a woman
I don't need to reach for no castles in the sky
Just put your arms around me, devour me

Paradise is here, it's time to stop your crying
The future is this moment and not some place out there
Tonight I need your love, don't talk about tomorrow

Right now, I need your loving
Right now, give it to me
Right now, I want your loving
Rigt now

Don't say tomorrow
To give me sorrow

- Paul Brady - 5:35
11.I'll be thunder
I'll be thunder

Album: Break every rule - 1986

There’ll be a storm one night
Then i’ll fly to you for shelter
Soaked in welcome rain
Falling to forbidden arms
Too breathless
Too helpless
Too restless to explain
Needing you

There’ll be a storm one night
But you will find my place of hiding
We’ll watch the lights like children
Leave the fortress hand in hand
I’ll be thunder
You’ll be lightning
I’ll be thunder
You’ll be lightning
And we’ll collide

On dry land

There’ll be a storm one night
And I will find no other rescue
Lost and far from home
Crying for some guiding light
Too breathless
Too helpless
Too hungry to refrain
From needing you

There’ll be a storm one night
The wind will drive me to your castle
And you’ll ignite the fire
Just as if everything were planned
I’ll be thunder
You’ll be lightning
I’ll be thunder
You’ll be lightning
And we’ll collide

On dry land

I’ll be thunder You’ll be lightning
I’ll be thunder
You’ll be lightning
And we’ll collide

On dry land

No betrayal
No denial
No need to explain
We’ll collide

Review from Allmusic
Because it contains its share of memorable and inspired material -- and even a few gems -- it seems inappropriate to call Tina Turner's Break Every Rule a disappointment.
But because Private Dancer was so incredible a comeback, one greeted this anxiously awaited follow-up with such high expectations that anything less than outstanding would have been disappointing.
And the album isn't outstanding -- it's generally quite enjoyable and far from weak -- but not outstanding.
Be that as it may, there's a lot to savor here. "Two People" is forgettable, but Turner definitely has some gems in the power ballad "I'll Be Thunder," the driving rocker "Back Where You Started" and the haunting David Bowie piece "Girls."
While Private Dancer would be a much better introduction to Turner's work as a solo artist, this has more pluses than minuses.
