1985 - Show some respect 7 Inch Single
"Show Some Respect" is a single from Tina Turner's album "Private Dancer".
This song was written by Terry Britten and Sue Shifrin.
When Roger Davies played this song for Tina, she really didn’t like it. She had no feeling about this song and Roger convinced Tina to wait for Terry Britten. When Terry came on board, who was already a fan of Tina because of her song "Nutbush City Limits", he heard that Tina didn’t like the song and he convinced Tina that he would make the arrangements for her so that she likes the song. Terry made song suitable for Tina and she went along with it,
"Show Some Respect" is about respect in a relationship. From Tina’s point of view it would be the woman who is working her butt of and asks for a little respect for her and her tasks she leaves behind because she’s at work. Don’t take it for granted, if you want to stay close. We both have to work on it.
Tina performed the song on Countdown 1984 and in a Japanese tv show mid 80’s. This song was included in the setlist of her live shows from 1984-1993. There was no official video shot for the song. As far as we know they’ve used certain live video’s which were shot during Tina’s Private Dancer Tour.
"Show Some Respect" came in a few formats: 7" single, 12" single and cassette. "Show Some Respect" was only released in Canada and USA.
The B-side of the 7" single was a live version of "Let’s Pretend We're Married". This song was written by Prince in 1982 and was used for his hit movie Purple Rain.
"Let’s Pretend We're Married" is a catchy synthpop song about a man who’s left by his girlfriend, and another woman shows up at his doorstep. He tries to convince her to stay with him all night for some love fun. Tina covered the song in her 1983 tour and made her own rockpop version of it. She made the lyrics a lot more clean so to speak. She also used this song as opening for her Private Dancer Tour.
Track Listing
"Show Some Respect"
Album: Private Dancer - 1984
I made a resolution
And I plan to keep my word
But I need you to make it work
You've gotta read the message
Understand what's on my mind
Cause not to see would be a crime
And we could lose it anytime
[Chorus:]
We've got to show some respect
We've got to learn to protect
Don't take it for granted I know
That if you want to stay close
We've got to show some respect
But I believe in working
Then I believe in a little help
Cause I'm not a light unto myself
Without a thing of value
Why settle for second best
We don't know what's up ahead
We can't let ourselves forget
[Chorus]
For the things that I love about you
From the woman that you see inside
Don't let it walk out the door
Love follows every time
[Chorus]
"Let's Pretend We're Married"
Single: I can't stand the rain (originally from Prince) - 1984
Excuse me but I need a love like yours
to help me forget the guy that just walked out that door
funny but it seems that ypu're alone like me
if you are then let's go see, see, see
Little darlin' if you're free for a couple of hours
And ain't busy for the next seven years
let's pretend we're married and go all night
there ain't nothin' wrong if it feels all right
I won't stop until the morning light
let's pretend we're married and go all night, tonight
Ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha yeah
everybody sing together
ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha- yeah
Excuse me but I need your tender skin
don't you want to be my fantasy
I don't care if you don't ever come
and if you go (so what)
c'mon baby, let's ball
And if you're free for a couple of hours
and ain't busy for the next seven years
let's pretend we're married and go all night
there ain't nothin' wrong if it feels all right
I won't stop until the morning light
let's pretend we're married and go all night, tonight
Ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha yeah
everybody sing together
ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha- yeah
ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha yeah
everybody singing
ooh-we-coo-coo-sha-sha- yeah
What you heard about me is true
I change the rules and do what I wanna do
I'm in love with life, it's the only way
'cause you and I know we gotta go some day
if you think I'm wild, you're probably right
'cause I'm gonna rock'n roll everyday and evey night
